I absolutly adore and appreciate that Makishima carries around an old fashioned barbers knife with him. Considering his longing for the past and a society built like the ones in the novels he reads, the antiquated shaving implement is quite a good choice for him.
Of course, being the musical lover I am, I can’t help but think of Sweeney Todd and the comments the show makes about about Victorian social stratification and other mores that persisted at that time. Makishima is largely doing the same thing but on a larger scale. Instead of individuals “feeding” off of one another we have a government feeding off of its citizens. With the Sweeney Todd connection, the whole last arc with the granary becomes quite ironic to me as well. Whether or not the connection was intentional, there are parallels that I appreciate.
